Messages are the backbone of any communications or marketing campaign … nothing is more important than strong, audience-appropriate content. And as Justin shared, there are additional considerations when it comes to content when blogging.
However, if content is king, there's an equally important queen to consider when communicating in the blogosphere. The adage my mother repeatedly delivered when I was a teen sums it up perfectly … “It's not only what you say, but how you say it.”
For business blogs, it's more about talking and less about selling. Tell stories. Ask for feedback and listen to it (you get smarter by taking note of what people tell you). Strive to build your readers' trust.
The most important thing to remember – blogging is all about building a relationship and your reputation. Your tone should be driven by the overarching goal of having a conversation with your readers (this conversation is often called real or authentic … I like to think of it as a conversation with a friend or co-worker … or even mom).
