Five Things I've Been Into Lately
By: Justin Lopinot | 11/18/2009
I was inspired by Greg Sullentrup, of Momentum Worldwide, who delivered a presentation to our office. After discussing the topic at hand, he shared 10 things that recently have caught his interest. He said he always concluded his presentations with this "10 things" practice. For us, his list included random things such as his love of Grammar Girl's Twitter page.
Oftentimes, I run across things I tweet about or just file away for later use, thinking to myself, "It's interesting, but not worth an entire blog post." So, without getting into the mundane back story any further, here are five things I have been into lately:
- IceRocket - I'm a Google guy, but IceRocket is worth checking out for searching blogs, twitter and news sites. Try the "Big Buzz" search for everything at once, and also give the auto-refresh function a chance to show what it can do for you.
- S**tmydadsays and FakeAPStylebook on Twitter - Though I mainly follow people in the St. Louis area who work in a related field, these two accounts provide random laughs throughout the day. And something for the masses to look forward to: S**tmydadsays apparently is being turned into a sitcom. Could it be the first Twitter-to-sitcom success story?
- Twubble - A Twitter-related site, Twubble looks at who the people you follow are following and then puts together a list of tweeps you might be interested in. Though I often don't find people to follow this way, I do find it interesting that, for example, I can quickly learn that three of my friends have no qualms about following a lame celebrity like Kim Kardashian.
- Traditional media relations - Social media is all the rage right now and newspapers are falling left and right, but lately I've found there's still room in the external communications landscape for traditional media relations. A plan should be integrated, of course, but there's still value to distributing media alerts and news releases.
- Bernie's 5 Minutes blog on STLtoday.com - For several years, my long commute to the office was filled with the sounds of Bernie Miklasz, my favorite source of sports information. First, he handled mornings and later the drive home for KSLG (1380 AM). However, he recently moved to bigger things with 101 ESPN. But with the move came a shift to a midday airtime. Listening during the day is nearly impossible for me, and I feel I'm missing out on so much great information. However, I can still get my Bernie fix through his blog, which is always full of good stuff. And to throw in a little bonus, Bernie's also a great follow on Twitter. I love that he's such a social media sports geek.
Hope you're able to check out a couple of the ideas and links, and that you find at least one of them helpful. If you have a minute, let me know what you've been into lately. Leave a comment, send me a message on Twitter or shoot me an e-mail.
