Last week a colleague sent this blog post from David Mullen around. In it, David identifies 10 clues to knowing if a client/company is getting good value from its PR counselors. I couldn't improve much on the list, or the comments that followed, except to suggest that good counselors also provide an outside perspective that may be different than what a client wants to hear. I call it the "emperor test" -- recalling Hans Christian Anderson's book "The Emperor's New Clothes." I'd love to hear from clients (and others) about what they'd add to this list!

David: You’re right, no one wants a ‘bobble-head’ for a PR counselor! In terms of your three-year-old, enjoy it now. My 15 and 17 year-old daughters think I’m never right!

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I included the opposite of that on the previous post - 10 Clues Your PR Pro is Nothing But Show - with something along the lines of “they never push back or challenge you. They simply take marching orders.”
Why would you hire an agency to do that? It doesn’t benefit your business and it doesn’t help you grow, either. If I want to hear that I’m right all the time, I’ll just talk to my three-year-old girl (She still thinks Daddy is always right!). If I want to achieve the goals on the table, I surround myself with bright, passionate people who do what I pay them to do - namely think, challenge (positively) and contribute.
