Is the President's Financial Rescue Plan a Laughing Matter?

Is President Obama turning the presidency and his position into a joke? Is it really necessary for him to go on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" to push his political agenda?

Some already have said that President Obama, who used an unconventional approach during his campaign, found a way to reach Americans who may not pay attention to a political speech or "State of the Union" address. The argument is that he is more in tune with the "average" American than past presidents have been.

Others say that he's making a mockery out of the White House and its regality, and using "The Tonight Show" is not going to be an effective way to convince Americans that his financial rescue package is the right answer. It could further the skepticism that already exists about his ability to "fix" the economic situation.

If you were his communications advisor, how would you coach President Obama to sell his policies?

Usually I’m asleep long before Jay Leno hits the airwaves.  Last night was different and I blame it on the after dinner cups of coffee and mocha.  As I tossed and turned in bed last night with a tired body but active mind, I decided to get up and watch Leno.  My timing was perfect!  I tuned in just as President Obama was being introduced.

I thought having the President on Leno was a smart move.  I think it’s safe to say that more people tune in to late night shows than watch presidential speeches, evening news, Keith Obermann or Rush Limbaugh.

I find it refreshing to have a President who is not afraid to try new avenues to get his messages to all people.  Whether or not we agree with any or all of his actions or ideas, we now have a President that’s not hiding behind the walls of the White House.

Great post. I agree it was a mistake to appear on The Tonight Show. Given the gravity of the situation and the serious beating Obama and his administration took all week, his appearance made him look aloof and out of touch. Besides which, this is a President who is at his best when speaking before a large crowd; intimate chats are not at all his strength.

Respect the people who are suffering and stick to your strengths, Mr. President.
