There's a great social media blog published by Jeff Bullas. I visit often because he posts amusing cartoons, and I'm a sucker for a good morning comic. His most recent post aims to debunk the latest findings suggesting Twitter is about 40% pointless babble. (NO ONE WANTS TO KNOW IF YOU'RE SLEEPING. OR GOING TO LUNCH. OR TO THE BATHROOM.) The beating that Twitter's reputation is taking over this survey is due mostly, in my opinion, to user error.
Now if your random comments every two hours lead to stimulating conversation, industry mobilization or breaking news, I might be able to give you a free pass. Jeff asserts that it's what you hear every day in regular conversation. But please, keep in mind the old adage: WIIFM. What's in it for me? If it's not relevant to your followers, you should think twice before you tweet.
Defending and sharing your Twitter successes can help you rise beyond the randomness. Post here, or on industry blogs, or on Jeff's blog on how Twitter is making a difference for your business. In my eyes, it's up to the business users of Twitter to prove its value and potential for building productive, trustworthy relationships. In short, tweet with a point!
