So I'm sitting in our staff meeting yesterday morning (a regular monthly occurrence - believe it or not, we're a communications group that actually communicates with each other... and with startling candor), and the thought occurs to me that this is actually a really exciting time to be a communications professional. New technologies and social media have opened up a whole new frontier to explore - and push the limits of - for our clients and our profession. We have nearly limitless opportunities to communicate with people on their terms, in their time and in their space - ten years ago, wouldn't that scenario have been what every PR pro would have had on their wish lists?
Some in the industry, though, seem to be treating this whole new world (I'm starting to sound like a Disney song) with extreme caution, or even disapproving negativity. C'mon - let's have some fun with this! Treat this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change the very way our industry is run and perceived. Try some new stuff, take a risk, fall on your face a few times - if it all goes bust, you can call me up and say, "I told you so."
But, if it doesn't, you may find what Standing Partnership has already discovered - that our approach to helping our clients achieve their goals, the very terms by which we describe our firm, and the energy that this new frontier is creating in all of Standing's people - is changing for the better. Our glass is overflowing - how about yours?

What a great attitude for your company and you to have. Lots of folks are taking a wait and see approach. Heck, my wager is that the deeper and broader contributions online are still primarily by early adopters.
The online word of social media etc has yet to be really breached. If only it were easier to convince companies and individuals to give it a try. To reach out and have conversations.
