The presidential campaign of Barack Obama (now hours away from being sworn in as the 44th president of the United States) has been lauded for its use of social media. Today, there are thousands of ways to use social media to track the goings-on in Washington D.C. This is a short list we've started of some of the avenues on the Internet leading to the inauguration:

CNN and Facebook have teamed up to provide updates and streaming coverage of the event.

On YouTube, XPLANE offers the 2009 Inauguration Edition of Did You Know? Thanks to Ann for that tip!

People on the scene in Washington, D.C., will be adding photos throughout the day to this Flickr set.

Twitter users can follow the buzz using a couple of different search terms, but this one seems to be the most popular.

You can use Google Blog Search or Technorati to stay on top of blog posts that reference the inauguration.

There is, of course, the official Inaugural Blog, which has partnered with Tumblr to provide a live, dedicated feed of blogger reactions during the day.

For those of us engaged in social media, this is a pretty exciting day for more than just the inauguration of a new president, but the collective muscle-flexing of all social media tools and the vast array of possibilities for tracking the buzz online. What tool(s) will you be using online to stay on top of what's happening in Washington?

There I was, poised at my desktop to watch live streaming video from CNN and Facebook. Bum, bum, bum. I was entered into a queue…where it said I had to wait in line to be admitted. WHAT?! I headed to the nearest TV.
