Tips for Selecting a Professional Organization

As a young professional, selecting which professional organization(s) to join can seem daunting. After all, there are hundreds, sometimes thousands, in nearly every industry, and so many of them seem similar. I have found it very difficult to choose which organization(s) to select when faced with so many different options.

At Standing, we're encouraged to pursue professional organizations that match both our personal and professional interests. And my colleagues and I take advantage of Standing's learning culture by participating in a wide range of professional organizations including Social Media Club St. Louis, International Association of Business Communicators, St. Louis Agribusiness Club, Public Relations Society of America and Healthcare Businesswomen's Association, just to name a few.

While the choice isn't always an easy one, there are steps that can make the choice easier. If you're contemplating joining a professional organization, I encourage you to consider the following tips:

  • Decide what you want from the organization. Many organizations offer excellent educational opportunities and networking opportunities. And some offer a mix of both. Are you looking for access to webinars? Social events? On-site tours? In-person meetings and conferences?
  • Membership is a two-way street, and you often will experience greater benefits from being a member if you also invest time and resources in the organization you join. Determine the amount of time per week new members must invest, and ensure it matches the amount of time you're willing to contribute.
  • Do your research. Be cautious about joining just any organization or joining too many organizations. If you're considering a particular organization, attend their next meeting or function. Talk to individuals who are already members of the organization and ask them about the organization's mission and activities.
  • Don't commit too soon. Joining a professional organization is sometimes costly. Don't rush your decision.

What factors did you consider when selecting which professional organization to join? Or, are you still searching for the right fit?

Great tips, Jessica! I agree—while participating in a professional organization or serving on a board can be time consuming, it also has its rewards! Through IABC, I’ve been given leadership and professional development opportunities I haven’t always had in a 9-5 job. That in itself makes it worthwhile. And, I’ve always felt more “at home” with IABC…that’s why it’s my professional oranization of choice!

I’m more than happy to chat more with you if you would like wink

I’ve found that the best way to get a feel for a professional organization is to dive in head first. Twice now I have joined an organization’s executive board on the same day that I have become a member! Working closely among those who are most knowledgeable and passionate about the organization has helped me understand the value I can gain from the group and its activities.
