Trader Joe's Unauthorized Commercial

Although these days I mostly find myself humming something off of U2's No Line on the Horizon CD, today I've found myself humming a little diddy from the Trader Joe's Unauthorized Commercial as posted by Philanthropy.com and being shared around the nonprofit world. I give them credit for creating a dialog around the benefits and risks of social media. Personally, I found the short, cell-phone-shot digital clip (captured covertly in a Trader Joe's) to be funny and entertaining. Sure I complained about a few things but after watching it. I (and I admit I'm not a Trader Joe's shopper) wanted to be among the "beautiful moms in their yoga-style clothes" shopping for unique and obscure items. The point is someone cares enough about Trader Joe's to have captured the essence (at least in their mind) of shopping there, and the rest of us are chuckling along and forwarding the link. Not a bad thing, in my mind!

Check out the video for yourself and let me know what you think:

I love Trader Joe’s.  Does anyone else think they may have been smart enough to authorize or commission this very piece?  If not, I image they are definitely savvy enough to understand how powerful it is, even with some of the criticism.

I agree, it’s so slick maybe they did.  They could certainly continue to leverage it.

Tammy, you were just looking for an excuse to bring up U2, weren’t you? (insert emoticon here, if I used ‘em)

I thought it was a pretty catchy and clever tune (and the whole Belle & Sebastian-ish indie-folk-pop vibe fits the Trader Joe’s image well). I also got the feeling if it wasn’t corporate approved, it was something the people at the store at least were in on.
