Using Facebook for Work
By: Marijean Jaggers | 12/03/2007
Studies (and personal experience) show that companies are adopting social media and engaging in social networking at an increasing rate of speed. Social networking, as explained by this Common Craft video, is the online connection, collaboration and relationship development between people who share common interests. Social networking tools include Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn.
Here are just a few ways I've used social networking in the last few months:
- Connected with a local broadcast journalist as a friend in Facebook and pitched a media opportunity that came to fruition last week
- Found a panelist for a workshop I'm moderating this week, through a blogger and Facebook friend
- Joined the group developed by Worldcom Public Relations Group, in an effort to get to know our global colleagues better and create opportunities for collaboration
- Used my group connections to get feedback from social media experts on a social media training tool I'm developing
- Reconnected with a classmate to help collect our fellow alumni for our upcoming 20th high school class reunion (that's right -- I'm not a Millenial!)
- Reviewed my nephew's interests in his profile to find a suitable holiday gift idea
- Learned more about the interests of clients, colleagues, contacts and friends by reviewing the groups they've joined
Are you in Facebook? (If you are, here's
my profile) How have you used social networking lately?
