What is Google Plus?

In our first video blog debate, my colleague Nick Sargent and I discuss the social media question of the season "What is Google Plus?" This might seem like a simple enough question, but for a new network, which has generated both enthusiasm and disappointment among its users, answering it is key.

Watch the video below for our impressions of the network. Also, stay tuned for the other two parts of this series -- where we answer who should use Google Plus, and give our predictions for where the network will be a year from now.

What do you think of Google Plus so far?

I learned from your video!  Hadn’t heard about Google Plus.  Is LinkedIn similar to Google Plus?  I was contemplating starting a new group on LinkedIn for Community Radio Stations.  Is Google Plus a program that must be purchased?

Thanks for reading! Google Plus is a social network like LinkedIn, but it has different functionality. LinkedIn is primarily a professional network, most people are using it to keep their business contacts & information. LinkedIn might be more appropriate for the group at this point, unless you have a strong list of people to invite to join your Google+ circle now.

However, you can always go ahead and join Google+, create a page for KZ88 and share your news/stories. NPR is already there, so it’s likely community radio stations will follow!

Love this format to capture your personalities—and I have to say that I’m not endeared to Google+ yet. Right now, my circles are so small that they aren’t yet meaningful. I do appreciate the segmentation aspect of Google+, as we all know that everyone needs to hear the nugget that’s of most interest to them. In the coming weeks, I’ll be watching to see if I get invited to circles that make the time investment worthwhile! Right now that’s debatable. This strikes me as the next Ning… a lot of hype, but not much follow-up.
