From communications ethics to sustainability, these are the stories that caught our attention this week:
1. Marketers are harnessing the awesome power of gamification, bringing to light a new set of ethical quandaries. For instance, these adver-games for cereals targeted to children add a new layer to the debate over marketing to children.
2. This week the Supreme Court heard testimony on a health care marketing controversy. Does access to doctors' prescribing records help marketers better target their information? Or, does that access constitute an invasion of patient and practitioner privacy? Keep an eye on this story as it develops -- it could have great implications for the future of targeted marketing and privacy.
3. A local St. Louis Community College student, Mike Ziegler, took on the issue of journalistic integrity on Twitter using Storify, a unique storytelling tool. See the results here.
4. Currently there's great dialogue around sustainable food production. But it no longer ends there. Restaurants in California are taking action to ensure even your leftovers meet a sustainable end.

Loved story 3 and its innovative use of social networking to show the differing motives of RT’s and Favorites. Clever idea!

The composting article is so interesting. I’ve been wanting to try composting for a while, but it seems like a lot of trouble for a small household in a residential area. But, that article makes me excited for the day when we’ll have a “compost day” much like we already have a “regular trash pickup day” and “recycle day.”

Heinrich - I agree! I’m was extremely impressed with Mike’s approach; and that he received so much feedback from the news organizations themselves!
Jessica - I’m with you - I’d love to try composting, but I’m in an apartment, and I can’t imagine my neighbors (or husband!) would be happy about the addition of a composting pot, no matter how sustainable it is!

The article about composting restaurant leftovers is great!! I was just thinking about this issue last night as we were “Dining Out For Life.” It’s a small start, but it’s really cool to see people looking at all angles of being more sustainable and environmentally responsible.
