What We're Reading: Avoiding Bad Media Relations

At Standing, we approach reputation management through five distinctive disciplines including public relations. One of the core components to public relations is, of course, media relations. This week we appreciated these articles that remind PR practitioners “what not to do” when reaching out to the media.

  1. No matter how “exciting” your news is, find a new word! Tired of numerous press releases overusing the word “exciting/excited,” Todd Wasserman, Mashable’s business and marketing editor began “Everyone’s Excited in Press Releases.” If you are an offender, please stop now before you make another journalist nauseous.
  2. On Ragan.com, Gil Rudawsky, shares Five Bad PR Practices That Will Frustrate Journalists. My favorite is not having a spokesperson ready after gaining interest from a reporter – major fail.
  3. Theprcoach.com offers four tips to consider before deciding whether or not to do a release, along with 18 of the worst news release headlines.

Do you have any tips for avoiding media relations blunders?

Thanks for sharing these links, Chrissy! I hadn’t thought of the “excited” issue before, but you’re right - it’s all too common.
