What We’re Reading: Oct. 10-14

With the recent passing of Steve Jobs, I've been thinking a lot about the way technology has revolutionized our professional lives. Imagining life before personal computing and the Internet is almost unfathomable. When forced to consider life without that access, I imagine early communications professionals fighting over a limited number of copies of newspapers and trade magazines - all read by candlelight, of course.

In 2011 information consumption looks a little different. The mode has changed -- from diving into a whitepaper or report on your iPad to scanning today's headlines on your phone in the elevator. The sources have also changed as the media playing field widens, giving rise to an immense variety of publications.

All these changes have made it absolutely fascinating to see the variety of what different team members at Standing read. So, without further adieu, I present to you a theme-less What We're Reading, with articles as diverse as our team's passions:

  1. Maria shared a fascinating piece from The Atlantic on "The Quiet Health-Care Revolution" about one company's efforts to hold down health care costs by providing better care. Talk about a win-win!
  2. Jessica enjoyed learning more from about the controversial "Think Pink" breast cancer research campaign from this broadcast news story from Fox News.
  3. Christi found this post on real-time marketing from David Meerman Scott's blog "Web Ink Now." She saw it as a fascinating reminder that "having a plan, a message, a strategy and a team in place are key to getting in the right mindset!"
  4. Kristin shared an article from Yahoo Finance on 10 workplace habits that could cost you your career. From stealing pens to having poor email etiquette, this list is a nice refresher of little ways to pursue office Utopia.
  5. I enjoyed diving into a blog post shared by someone I follow on Twitter about the new Dr. Pepper campaign "Dr. Pepper 10: It's Not For Women."
