One of our faithful readers (thanks, Sarah K!) alerted us to an interesting vlog series by writer, professor and all around smart guy Howard Rheingold. The first entry in the series is a walk down the memory lane of social media, starting way back in the - gasp! - early 1980s, when most of us were carrying around our boom boxes on our shoulders and marveling over the wonders of MTV (believe it or not, they actually used to play music videos on MTV - shocking, I know.)
Heck, I can remember choosing my roommate in college just because she was the only person I knew who owned a computer, and I hated pulling all-nighters in the campus computer lab. (You don't have to do the math. It indeed was a long time ago - let's just leave it at that.) Now look at us - we practically have coronaries if we can't instantly get in touch with someone around the world. On a webcam. With no delay. While texting with one hand, plugging in our iPod with another and driving with our knees.
Anyway, Rheingold's vlog got me thinking - what's next? What new social media tool would make you more productive or successful at work? If you had 15 minutes in a room with the most innovative technological minds in the world, for what social media tools would you ask? Or, would you just ask them to slow down the innovations a little so you could catch up? Is it possible for us to be more connected than we already are?
