Wisdom is Where You Find It

If you need advice on management, why not turn to the boss? The Boss, Bruce Springsteen.

As Springsteen's latest tour rolled into Washington, D.C., the hometown paper did a Q&A interview with Nils Lofgren, who grew up in the Washington area and has been playing with Springsteen since 1984. From that interview, executive coach Scott Eblin, who blogs on GovernmentExecutive.com, found these "greatest hit" thoughts for managers:

  • What might you do with your team that would lightheartedly engage them and keep it fresh?
  • What kind of experience matters most to the results that you and your team are expected to deliver? What are you doing to recruit and develop that experience?
  • As a leader, what matters enough to you to take a stand and stick with it? What are you doing to communicate those principles?
  • What are you doing to let your team know what you think is worth being passionate about?

I'm indebted to a fellow Springsteen fan who works for the federal government for passing along Eblin's post and the Washington Post interview that inspired it.

Maybe we should all reignite our fire by dusting off some half-forgotten hits from our youth.
